We must not destroy the earth, our rivers and oceans with nuclear pollutants or any other pollutants and we must unilaterally stop the proliferation of nuclear arms. We can no longer drink the river water around the world. We must raise the consciousness of our civilizations. The day we can all drink water from the rivers will be a sign that we have achieved a new and more profound humankind.

The Only Arms
by
Sylvia Ernestina Vergara
2006

The only arms I wish to bear
are the ones I was born with

My two arms, right and left
reach into the sky
and down to earth

Through my arms I embrace the love of my life
Breath intermingles
Hearts beat in love’s dialogue,
Blood flows in life’s passion as
rivers do when their waters rise

My arms are for picking
apples, plums and cherries in the orchard,
raising children
and helping my elderly mother.

They are for gathering bouquets of flowers,
collecting remedio healing herbs in the meadows and fields,
pouring rainwater from the cisterns to nurture the plants
They are for healing and loving—
For painting, making music,
writing stories and poetry

In dreams, my “wishing”
sees myself cupping my hands and drinking
purest water from the Río Grande
just as my ancestors did.

My hands are filled
with this “dream within beautiful dreams”
and I know that when the world
can drink like this
from its rivers,
that we will all be safe and blessed by the earth
This is the great bendición,
the great sign given to the right and left arms

Hands join, actions begin, love abounds
hopes and dreams become real

Let us come together
                     and drink the river water
Let us feel Earth’s blessing in Peace.
