La
Carreta in Transit (forty color and black and white photographs) is a visual
stream of consciousness through northern New Mexico Agriculture,
nature, santos, self-image and flamenco dance.
The
photographs articulate in varying style my desire to share an
amalgam of themes through visual stream of consciousness. La
Carreta is the name of my culinary company. Preserves and
apple cider herbed vinegars are created with fruits from my
orchard in Dixon as well as syrups, ciders, tea and jam products.
The name "La Carreta"
is derived from stories my grandmother told describing the long
wait for trail wagons to bring staples up the Camino
Real de Tierra Adentro to early Spanish settlers in New
Mexico and Colorado.
In
this exhibit, "La Carreta"
(the cart) is a metaphor. It is a journey of an autobiographical
nature through time and space. The images reveal a captured moment
in a season brought forward through black and white and color
photography. Numerous photographs tell a personal story. I have
lived for thirty-five years on a farm and orchard in Dixon, N.M.
Scenes
of apple harvest, irrigating and photos of dried fruits and
preserves are taken out of regular context and conveyed in a dream
like -- steam of consciousness experience remembered and brought
forward in time.
Other photos are self-images of a diary
nature and also visionary in terms of a "real" and more hidden
self. I describe an inner vision of the "self," as it wants to
be expressed. It is also a personal and intimate dialogue between
the photographer (myself) and the camera. I feel that women still
have few opportunities to articulate how they see themselves.
It is important to put forth these self-images to re-define
and articulate that which is seldom revealed about the "self".
Other photos are images of nature, some of which are influenced by
Santos.
"Santos (religious statues) are
mirrors and windows through which we place ourselves in our
vulnerable human state. In the 'passing through,' compassion
and guidance influence and bring inspiration into thoughts,
feelings and actions. What takes place is a personal, spiritual
unfolding that helps one bare the hardships of life." SEV
Through
visual movement, a story of flamenco dance drawn from family,
experience and performance unfolds. These include photos in black
and white and also color of different flamenco dance forms such as
Soleá,
Bulerías and Alegrías. "Tablao" is the name of the café or small
nightspot in Spain where flamenco dance sometimes take place. The tablao
is a place where "tapas" (culinary small food
combinations) are served.
My technique is simple and meant to
disappear so that images are the primary speakers. Photos are
created hand-held camera shots, scans and timer released images
using a 35 mm Olympus 2 under low and natural light conditions:
then digitally cropped, occasionally lightly enhanced and in one
case layered. Under my direction, the final print is a
lab-produced gicleé on 100% cotton Somerset archival paper.
Five
separate themes (agriculture, nature, santos, self-image and
flamenco dance) are put together by separately interweaving these
various expressions. The "linear" experience is the day-to-day
living as it happens; the journey of La
Carreta passes through this visual stream of consciousness
of varying experience.
Included
in the exhibit will be a display of my self-published books of
poetry, drama, non-fiction narrative, story and essays. Some of
the books are also bi-lingual (English/Spanish).
